A Magic Takeover

I thought the trade of DeMarcus Cousins was going to be the highlight of trade deadline week in the NBA. I don’t think anyone was expecting this to happen. Magic Johnson became an adviser to the Lakers just 20 days ago, and now suddenly he is the Head of Basketball Operations.

Magic essentially just took Jim Buss’s job, and I don’t think anyone could be happier about than Lakers fans. Ever since his dad Dr. Jerry Buss died this guy seems like he had no idea what to do. The mess with Phil Jackson a few years back was the final nail in the coffin, and I honestly was shocked he wasn’t fired after D’Antoni got canned. Seriously who thought that guy was a good choice to coach an old Lakers team? Then they went and hired poor ol’ Byron Scott who was coming off a terrible stint as the Cavaliers head coach. Talk about a sitting duck. Scott had no chance to succeed in that situation. The Lakers were basically held in limbo by the horrible contract they had given Kobe. They couldn’t rebuild through free agency due to the insane amount of money Kobe was getting, and their draft picks were not existent until 2014. Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak overstayed their welcome big time.

I think everyone and their mother by now knows that Jeanie Buss and Magic Johnson are great friends. With Phil going and taking the Knicks job who else besides Kobe was a big enough face for the Lakers to bring in? I’m again shocked this didn’t happen sooner. The issues facing Magic in this situation are big though. Can he evaluate talent? Can he bring in the big free agents? Will he make coaching changes? I’m sure there are more, but these are the big ones. Magic has to try to not be Phil Jackson. Phil could coach, but as we are seeing he has no idea what he is doing in New York. Magic could play, but will he be able to revive the Lakers? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
